With generous overhangs, shaded terraces, operable systems and solar cells – the goal of the Verandah House was to embrace Florida’s subtropical latitude.
By orienting the main house on an East-West axis and adding 16 foot roof overhangs, the design minimizes solar impact upon the house and creates a cooler-microclimate around the pool. Spaces under these overhanging roof trusses serve as a verandah, mediating the warm subtropical climate and encouraging the owners to engage in exterior activities. Solid masonry walls wrap and protect the design from neighboring views and focus inward by opening the design more towards the interior courtyard.
