PHILLIPI CREEK RESIDENCE

Located along the waterway of Phillippi Creek in Sarasota, Florida – the residence sits on a triangular shaped lot as the adjacent creek twists around a bend through the neighborhood. In an attempt to maximize the lot within the residence and take full advantage of the Florida landscape, the design situates itself along the edge of the site and shifts parallel to the water’s edge. By positioning the residence in such a way, the design fosters a centralized exterior living space within itself.

Two large overhangs are extended beyond the walls throughout the design to create an ample of amount of exterior shade and encourage interaction with the Florida climate. These overhangs collectively unify the office and guest bedrooms through the exterior circulation and maintain the prominent placement of the main living spaces along the water’s edge. This uniform gesture then begins to acknowledge specific moments in the site’s context where the design opens up and frames views out over the creek as well as responding to the neighborhood street. An upper level balcony, perched over the entrance, offers a viewing platform to catch views of the setting sun – while creating a transparent entrance.
